Texas does not require insurance on a personal recreational boat, but lenders and marinas commonly do. A homeowners policy may cover damage to a small boat for a limited dollar amount, and it does not provide liability coverage, so a boat that carries guests or tows skiers usually belongs on its own policy.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department requires registration for every motorized boat and for sailboats and other vessels 14 feet or longer, plus titles for motorized boats and most gas outboard motors. Anyone born on or after September 1, 1993 must complete a boater education course to run a boat with a motor over 15 horsepower or a windblown vessel over 14 feet. To operate a personal watercraft alone, a person must be at least 13 and have completed the course, and many boat policies also restrict young operators.
Canyon Lake is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir with zebra mussels, so clean, drain and dry your boat and trailer before you launch somewhere else. Medina Lake, about 40 miles from San Antonio, can rise or fall as much as 40 feet with rainfall, which changes water depth and ramp access from season to season. Calaveras and Braunig Lakes are owned by CPS Energy and open to boating.
Texas law does not require it for a personal recreational boat. Lenders commonly require it on a financed boat, and many marinas ask for proof of liability coverage before you rent a slip.
Most homeowners policies cover damage to a boat for a limited dollar amount and provide no liability coverage. A boat policy covers more expensive boats and pays for injuries and damage you cause to others.
Agreed value pays up to a set value written in the policy. Actual cash value pays to repair or replace the boat minus depreciation, and replacement cost pays without that deduction.
Texas law does not require it, but a personal watercraft can cause serious injury or damage, so liability is worth a close look, especially when guests ride. Operators born on or after September 1, 1993 need boater education, and a rider must be at least 13 and have completed the course to operate one without an adult on board.
A layup provision suspends coverage during the months a boat is not in use. Tell us the months you store the boat so the dates match when you actually take it out. As an independent agency, we can request quotes from more than one insurance company.
